Keeping Ourselves Safe
These are the discussion topics we have talked about in class:
Wk 1, Friday
Today we talked about bullying and its effects.
At home: Talk about what your child could do if they were bullied. Ask your child to tell you about the video.
Wk 2, Monday 12 May
Today we talked about the difference between ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’.
At home: Ask your child to give you examples of each type of touch. Talk to your child about what they could do if they were touched in ways that hurt or confused them.

Term 2 begins!!!
Welcome back for another wonderful term in Room 8.
We had a great day today with everyone wearing big smiles all day.
We quickly got into reading our non-fiction article and showed that we have good understanding of what we are reading - we are experts on Huhu grubs now!!!!
In RE we are learning about the Holy Spirit and how we should be showing that we are making good choices.
Some fantastic oral language finished off the day - not surprisingly the children found it very easy to talk for 30 seconds on subjects such as bananas, leaves and cats!!!
Don't forget Cross-country on Thursday. Jacqui Restieaux was looking for a few more parents to help out on the course. You are able to watch your own child and then help with the other teams. Any volunteers give your names to Mrs McDowell to pass on.

End of Term 1
Term 1 is at an end and it seems to have gone very fast.
Everything is going really well in the class. We are expert rubbish detectors in our area and are very proud of keeping it clean and tidy. There is a tomato on our plant and we have devised a cover to keep out any inclement weather!!!
Our writing lessons are amazing and the children are using heaps of adjectives and interesting sentence starters.
Here is a link if you want to do some extra reading over the holidays - as a class we are very enthusiastic readers so a trip to the library could be a good activity if it rains !!!!! (hope it doesn't!).
Have a happy and holy Easter and relaxing holidays.

Our tomato plant
Mr Jeffs gave us a tomato plant and we are watering it and feeding it with plant food. It has a flower and we think we might get a tomato before the first frost!!!!!
Our volcano experiments
This was lots of fun - we discovered that the size of the bottle is important as you need too much baking soda and vinegar for the reaction to come out of the top - a small bottle is best!!!

Guess the number of lollies in the jar
Room 8 have decided to complete a few projects as a class to raise money for Caritas this Lent. The first one is to "Guess the number of lollies in the jar".
The idea as decided by the class is that from Monday 3rd of March the Lolly Jar will be in Room 8 on Mrs McDowell's desk.
For 50c anyone in Room 8, their brothers and sisters and any of their friends can come to Room 8 and have a guess at the number of lollies. The jar will not be moved from Room 8 and we will not be asking the whole school to help us.
The lollies in the jar have been donated. Mrs McDowell will collect the money and will also announce the winner on Friday 14th March after assembly in Room 8. If the winner is not one of our class we will take the lolly jar to them.

Welcome to 2014
We have all settled in well and are working well.
We are learning a lot about the Solomon Islands - this is the Caritas project for New Zealand schools this year. The aim is that our purple classroom Caritas box will be full of donations by Easter. We will then send it to Caritas in Auckland and they will use the money to help a school or village in the Solomons.
